For the isli
- 3 cups flour
- 1 cup olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 tsp brown sugar
For the filling
- 2/3 cup nuts crushed (walnuts, cashews, almonds)
- 1 tbsp cinammon
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp cloves
For the syrup
- 1 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 1/4 cup water
- 1 1/4 cup honey
- juice from one lemon
Instuctions
- Make the syrup. Combine the honey, sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan, then bring to the boil. Boil for about 10 minutes until the syrup has thickened slightly.
- Preheat the oven to 380oF.
- Make the isli. In a bowl mix all the ingredients until you form a non-sticky dough.
- In another bowl, add and mix all the ingredients for the filling.
- Take a bit from the dough and create a small ball. Place it on your hand and open it up in a circle. Place one spoon from the filling and close it creating a small triangle. Turn it around and with tweezers, pinch them to create the decoration on top.
- Place them in a baking pan with some parchment paper and bake for 25 minutes.
- Float the isli in the syrup a few at a time, count to 5 and turn them over to make sure they soak up plenty of liquid. Wait 5 more seconds and, take them out with a fork.
- Sprinkle with leftover filling if you want.
